In the summer of 2018, local artists were invited to submit painted prototypes of manhole covers for Citizen's Energy's Dig Indy Project. The prototypes were displayed for a month at The Harrison Center, and fifteen entries were selected to become actual manhole covers! For my entry, I decided to create a giant peony(Indiana’s state flower) gently unfurling before the viewer. Hinting, perhaps not-so-subtly, at feminine iconography, this piece points to women of substance in Indianapolis. The title, May’s Bloom, is for May Wright Sewall, who helped to establish the Indianapolis Women’s Club, among many other civic reforms and accomplishments. The month of May is also the peak blooming season for peonies in Indiana, tossing another significance to the name of this piece. While aware of its own cheekiness, this magnificent flower also stands as an invitation for Indianapolis women to continue on the path so may others have walked before us. Located on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, just below the IAC's Arts Garden, on the northwest corner of Washington and Illinois streets, I encourage you to go stand before May’s Bloom.
